The ending made me happy. Clearly a phenomenally well written book, just not completely my style for most of it, especially the middle section, but the start and especially the end were wonderful.

Summary

Between Two Fires
Christopher Buehlman

Oh man I forgot to do this one for almost a month

Ser Thomas and a band of ruffians come upon a donkey outside a barn. The black plague is ravaging the french countryside during the 13th century and they kill the donkey and cook it in the barn. Eventually a young woman walks in and tells them they killed her donkey. The leader of the group is going to rape her but Thomas stalls him so she runs away. Later the leader sends another member out to get the girl but Thomas then kills everyone present but the girl. They go on the road together and the girl claims she can see angels.

They come to a small town and a local priest gives them wine but wants Thomas to help him kill a monster in the river. Thomas (an ex knight) agrees and kills it but almost dies. The girl saves him. She seems to have some sort of divine blessing and says she needs to get to Avignon to see the pope but is not sure why. The three take a long, dangerous, winding journey there, encountering many demons, angels, mortals, and learning about their own backstories and moral failings. Eventually the priest dies but Thomas and the girl reach the city and find the pope to have been replace by Beazelbub the demon. In the end thomas kills some demons and the lord awakens and the devil is thrown back down and the world is saved and the girl is the second coming of christ.
