There were points I almost stopped reading this. Incredibly brutal sections throughout that genuinely made it hard to continue. Despite that the story Butler tells is so vivid and real that by the end I discovered I loved the book. A story featuring aliens but really delves into the human condition. The anger you feel at almost every character in this story is astounding. I think this book is best to go into with little background on, but make sure you are ready for a hard, violent book at times.

Dawn Summary

Lilith Iyapo awakens in a small room. She has been a prisoner for some time now but is unsure why or how she got here. She is forced to live with indignities like no clothes, no bathroom, and nothing to do. She is interrogated about her life in depth by unseen people.

We learn that humanity nearly destroyed itself in a nuclear war. Lilith was married to her husband Sam and their son Ayre, but they both died in a car accident before “The War”. Eventually, after a very long period of isolation and boredom, one of her captors comes to meet Lilith. Jdahya, at first appears to be a man, but Lilith realizes he is an alien. She freaks out and can’t interact with him, but slowly she adjusts to his presence.

He tells her is an Oankali, and they are an alien race who saved the remaining humans on Earth and now are on a huge ship in Earth’s orbit. Oankali have three genders, male, female, and Ooloi. Lilith was kept in isolation for 2.5 years while they questioned her, and in total it has been 250 years since Earth “died”, with Lilith and most humans kept in a suspended animation sleep during that time. Jdahya stays with Lilith until she can function around the Oankali, then takes her out to meet others and see more of the ship.

The ship is a massive living structure that the Oankali can manipulate with their bodies. We meet Jdahya’s family. He is in a marriage type thing with himself, a female, and an Ooloi named Kahguyat. They also have a child ooloi Nikanj, who begins to bond with Lilith. She learns that the ooloi can do some weird body altering dna gene editing stuff. Kahguyat already removed a cancerous tumor from her while she slept and then edited her genes so she would never get cancer again. Lilith learns that the Oankali travel the universe “trading” with other species. They saved the remnants of humanity and will take them back to a healed Earth, in exchange for humans genetic material. They basically forcibly interbreed and mess with other species DNA.

This is disturbing to Lilith who hates the idea, but she is pretty powerless. Nikanj is now her personal overseer/”friend”, and wants to learn from her and teach her in a culture swap. Lilith is planned to lead a group of humans to be the first settlers back on Earth, so goes through many lessons to learn how to do this. Eventually after a long time of asking she is allowed to see another human. She is brought to meet Titus, who was woken up as a 14 year old boy but is now 28. He decided to stay on the ship and live with the Oankali since he does not want to put in the effort to help build a new human society on Earth. Him and Lilith talk for a bit and she learns he has fathered 70 children via Oankali sperm transfusion type process, since they needed more human “subjects”. She makes it clear she will not sleep with him so he tries to rape her, and she is only able to make him stop by asking him to think about if he may have fathered a child with his sister or mother during the Oankali process. He gets angry and beats her unconscious.

Lilith gets healed by Nikanj, since the ooloi can do that also. She accepts his offer to gene edit her so she has an eidetic memory and also can control parts of the living ship they are on. She begins to prepare to awaken and teach other humans in preparation of going to Earth. Lilith does not like the Oankali but figures the best way to escape is work with them and go home. She begins the long process of selecting people and having to wake them up and teach them about both the Oankali and their mission to restart on Earth.

Lilith starts with multiple women to try to prevent violence (does not work), but awakens Tate, Lea, Celene first, then Curt and Joseph as the first men. This first group is somewhat receptive but no one truly believes in the aliens or that they are on a ship, since the Oankali won’t show themselves. Lilith and Joseph begin a relationship, and it seems most of the humans pair off quickly. Lilith faces harsh criticism and arguments from some of the people, especially Peter and Jean. It comes to a head when they awaken Allison, and Peter and another man try to rape her. Lilith is forced to hurt them using her Oankali enhances strength. Nikanj reveals himself to Joseph and it sleeps with Lilith and Joseph, doing some weird alien mind drug sex thing.

Eventually all of the humans are shown that the aliens exist and are taken to a pseudo-Earth room on the ship to practice for the real thing. Most of the people dislike or distrust Lilith by now. After a while many of the group leave to try to run away, still not believing this is a ship with closed walls. Lilith goes with them to try to keep them safe, but Curt sees her and knocks her out. She wakes up to find Joseph was killed by Curt, and all of the Oankali ooloi are here. They track down the group and the ooloi are forced to subdue most of them, but Curt almost kills Nikanj with his axe. Lilith helps heal him but this earns her even more distrust from the humans.

Lilith is made to stay on the ship and train more humans, instead of getting to return to Earth. Then Nikanj reveals it impregnated her with Joseph’s baby. She is horrified and does not know what to do but makes it her goal to figure out how to save humanity. THE END.
