Elric is a classic fantasy character, with many short stories beginning in the 1960’s. Although the actual albino emperor, strongest sorcerer and descendant of dragons is an awesomely cool character, the writing lacks the pull of more modern works. I am impressed by what Moorcock accomplished for the time, especially while purposefully striving to stay out of Tolkien’s shadow, but despite the complex and interesting world, philosophical and deep characters, and interesting plot lines, the first official Elric novel just isn’t that fun to read.
