The Last Devil to Die Summary
Kuldesh, an antique shop owner, was killed just after Christmas. He had been given 100,00 pounds worth of Heroine in a terracotta box that he just needed to leave in his shop and someone would pick up the following day, but instead he hid it.
The Thursday Murder Club are trying to get to know Mervyn, a new resident at Cooper’s Chase and learn that he is falling for an online money scam, by someone pretending to be a young woman in love with him that needs cash for various reasons. Mervyn does not believe them, but does allow Ibrahim and their friend Bob to use his computer and try and catch the guy.
Chris and Donna get pulled off of Kuldesh’ murder case very early by the national drug agency, but Donna found Kuldesh’ phone and kept it. They are able to learn that Kuldesh called Nina Mishra, a professor at a university, and a blocked 777 number they can’t trace. Joyce and Elizabeth go to meet Nina and learn that she knew Kuldesh was occasionally involved in sketchy scenarios but she did not know why he was killed or where the heroine is.
The drug dealers, Mitch Maxwell and his subordinate Dominic Holt, are also both very anxious to find the drugs. Mitch got beat up by another drug dealer, Luca Butaci, who was supposed to end up with the Heroine. The gang goes to meet Dom Holt and he says to leave him alone and smashes Ron’s car a bit.
Joyce and Ibrahim track down Samantha, a local art forger and con artist. She and her husband Garth, a large, Canadian man, own an antique store also. They say they don’t know anything but seem to be lying.
Elizabeth is sidetracked taking care of Stephen, whose dementia is getting worse. They go to meet her friend Viktor in London and explore their possibilities. Bogdan and Donna do some off the grid police work and meet Dom Holt, who threatens them. Later, Chris and Patrice are also doing some undercover work and Chris finds Dom Holt dead in his office. Joyce takes pictures of a bunch of the files and they call the cops.
Elizabeth invites Luca, Mitch, Samantha, Garth, and Nina to a lunch at Cooper’s Chase. Kuldesh had a rental garage to store stuff, and they want to see who will go investigate it. Mitch is being threatened by the Afghans who produce Heroine and is still very desperate to find the Heroine.
Samantha gets hit on the back of the head and dies falling down a staircase, Garth has not been seen lately. Stephen uses drugs he got from Viktor and euthanizes himself, everyone is very sad. They hold a funeral.
Elizabeth realizes where the heroine is. Kuldesh brought it to Cooper’s Chase and buried it with Stephen in a garden. Garth meets with Luca and Mitch, then kills Luca for killing Samantha. Mitch and Garth head to Cooper’s Chase when they hear they have the heroine (Ibrahim told Connie Johnson in prison and she told other people).
Ibrahim also gets the online guy stealing money from Mervyn to come and he gets arrested, then Garth shows up and we learn the terracotta box the drugs were kept in was the valuable thing, worth 5-6 million. We also learn Nina killed Kuldesh when she learned about the box.
