My 500th tracked book! Pretty disappointing. It had a lot of aspects I found interesting or enjoyable, but overall just became boring. I loved the breakdown of religion and the history of Sumer, but it was counterbalanced with fairly dull characters and a weird, funky plot. On top of that the oversexualization of a 15 year old girl was not my favorite thing in the world. Partly I think I have just been doing too much sci-fi this year and am burnt out a little, but nothing in this book would make me want to read it again or continue if it was a series. The ending was strange and abrupt, and I can’t decide if naming the main character Protagonist is funny or stupid. The best part outside of the religious theorizing is probably the satire of an overly corporate future which seems to slowly be coming true.

Snow Crash Summary
Set in a dystopian future that has become ultra capitalist, most of the world is broken up into different corporations and franchises. Hiro Protagonist is a pizza deliverator for the mafia, run by Uncle Enzo. During one failed pizza delivery Hiro is forced to rely on a courier (Mail by skateboard) to deliver his pizza and he becomes friends with the courier, YT (Yours Truly). YT is a 15 year old girl going through a rebellious teenage punk phase.
Hiro lives in LA with a grunge/rock/loud noise musician named Vertali Chernobyl (Spelling). For work he is a hacker, concert promoter, ex-pizza delivery driver, and information gatherer. He collects info and gives it to the CIC Library, a massive collection of information that people pay to access parts of. He spends most of his free time within the Metaverse, a simulated reality only those with enough wealth to buy nice computers can access. Hiro is a talented hacker and self-proclaimed best sword fighter in the world, for both Earth and the Metaverse.
In the metaverse Hiro is somewhat famous, and goes to his friend David’s bar, the Black Sun. This is full of famous people and was coded by David, Hiro, and Juanita, who dated Hiro then married David but now is with neither. Hiro sees Juanita and David arguing, then Juanita gives Hiro the vague warning to avoid “Snow Crash” and logs off. Hiro was just offered some of what he assumed was a drug by a large man outside the bar. David tries some Snow Crash which shows him a bitmap. Shortly after this his computer crashes, and Hiro later learns David was sent into a coma and has been hospitalized.
Juanita got Hiro two expensive pieces of software, one is a real-time model of the Earth, and the other is a Daemon called The Librarian, able to access the Library information. Juanita was looking at information gathered by someone named Lagos, who was investigating a television / internet magnate L. Bob Rife. Rife donated a bunch of money to the Reverend Wayne Pearly Gates foundation, and claims to be able to speak in tongues. Rife also bought an aircraft carrier, the Enterprise, and now lets millions of people string boats off of it as it drifts between asia and america, this is called “The Raft”.
Hiro hosts a concert for Vitaly, which YT attends with a lot of other punk teenagers. During the concert Hiro meets Lagos, who is collecting information, and warns Hiro about a man named Raven (Who Hiro realizes is the big guy who offered him Snow Crash in the Metaverse). Shortly after that Hiro sees Raven driving a motorcycle with a sidecar. Raven has a deal with the Crips which soon escalates into violence. Hiro calls YT and tells her to tail Raven. Hiro then finds Lagos sliced cleanly in half by something super sharp. YT calls him and Hiro catches up to where Raven and the crips are fighting. Raven kills a lot of them and escapes. We learn that Raven keeps a nuke in his motorcycle sidecar and is incredibly dangerous.
Hiro dives deeper into Lagos’ research and with the help of the Librarian learns that Snow Crash is a modern version of a virus that has existed for millenia. The Sumerian myths about Enki and Asherah are somewhat real, and Rife is bringing back this ancient virus in an attempt to control people. The Tower of Babel was actually a good thing, since it stopped people speaking Sumerian which is like a base level language and stopped the virus spread. Juanita tells him she is going to Oregon to get on the Raft (Bob Rife’s big caravan thing).
Meanwhile, YT meets Uncle Enzo of the Mafia and he likes her (as a friend), so he gives her his old dogtags and says she is a friend of the family. Soon after she gets pulled in by the mafia to help them learn about a snow crash delivery she is making to a church owned by Reverend Wayne. Next she meets with a man named Ing (spelling) who works security for the company Mr. Lee’s Greater Hong Kong. Together they steal snowcrash from some drug dealers. It is very dangerous. YT’s mom works for the Federal Government, which in this time is a relatively small and not super powerful group, but they are incredibly controlling. Hiro and YT share information about Snow Crash and YT breaks her mom’s computer to make sure she can’t get infected. The next day when her mom goes to work they interrogate her and plan to capture YT. YT almost escapes the trap but ends up caught by some of Rife’s people, who take her to the Raft.
Hiro has learned pretty much everything about Snow Crash. It is a neuro-linguistic virus that can program the human brain. It has existed forever, and multiple groups have tried to fight it but it keeps coming back. There is a specific code that could simulate the tower of babel event and break the virus, but Hiro does not know that yet. He plans to go save Juanita and YT form the Raft. He fights his way north from LA to Oregon, killing a few people with swords along the way. When he gets to the dock he teams up with a man named Fisheye from the mafia. They reach the raft but then Fisheye and the rest of the mafia get killed (in part by Raven) so Hiro is alone.
On the raft, YT is on a date with Raven. She kind of likes him because he is so dangerous. They do inappropriate stuff, and Raven falls asleep due to a drug defense mechanism YT has, so she sneaks out to communicate with Hiro via the metaverse. Hiro makes it to the center of the Raft, the carrier Enterprise, and logs into the metaverse. Him and Raven have a motorcycle chase trying to stop Raven from infecting all the hackers in the metaverse, and learn that Hiro’s father and Raven’s father were both POW’s in WW2 together and it kind of brought both of their lives to the points they are now. Hiro saves the day and the hackers don’t get infected.
Bob Rife himself captures YT and they leave in a helicopter, but YT kicks out the anti-virus snow crash babel saving tablet for Hiro. Juanita saves Hiro (She has now mastered the virus and can control people). They figure out the code and say they are going to get back together.
YT gets saved by a bunch of other Couriers who pull the chopper down, and her mom picks her up and takes her home. Uncle Enzo planned to kill Rife, but Raven ambushes them and Enzo manages to kill Raven. Ending is super weird. That’s about it. THE END.
