I have wanted to listen to these for a while since they were free on audible but they are going away soon so trying to listen to one first to know if I like the series. This has been really good so far, I am going to try to finish all of them before august 5. It was quite good. Vivid characterwork, got me all upset.

Story:
Prologue with man named Shorecroft rescuing a small infant boy from two Bloodwood assassins, Hawk and Spider
Cut to a 17 year old boy Nail who lives with Shorecroft in the town of Gallow’s Haven. Small town where many people make a living hunting blue whale-esque beasts called Greakan’s. He is friends with Stefon Waylan, Dokie Little, and Zayn Nevil. They, like all young men, are required to enroll in 2 years of mandatory military training. Made clear early on that the church (In this country, Gul Kana, the last kingdom in The Five Isles not yet conquered by The White Prince, Aeros Rajel, of Sør Sevier) is very important and influential. They believe in Laijon as opposed to the “other side” who believe in Raijel who is Laijon’s earthly son or something like that (he has living descendants supposedly). Nail is a bastard who doesn’t know who his parents are, is in love with Ava Shay and bullied by Jenko Brook, son of the local baron. He feels like a bit of an outcast.
Our second story line is in the castle at the heart of Gul Kana, Amyidon, where we follow the POV’s of Princesses Jondralyn and Tala Bronachel, their father, Bourdan, was killed a number of years ago leaving their eldest brother Giovan king. He is unprepared and begins to fall under the influence of the Quorum of 5 archbishops, basically being a pawn to the church and taking out his anger and stress on those around him. Jondralyn wants to become a warrior, and also gets inducted to a secret organization The Brethren of Mir. Her, a dwarf Roguemoor, and an-ex assassin Hawkwood are co-conspirators.
Meanwhile Tala is pursued by a Bloodwood assassin somewhere in the walls of the castle while sneaking about the secret ways. Her, her “betrothed” Glade Chaperal, and her cousin Lindholf Legraven all flitz about.
On the other team, we see Gault Ailbrek stray away from his prince Aeros Raijel. Both sides are hunting for the weapons of the Five warrior angels. Ethic Shroud (Shield), Forgetting Moon (Battleaxe), Blackest Heart (Crossbow), Lonesome Crown (Helmet), Afflicted Fire (Sword), and the Angel Stones with them.
The armies of Sor Sevier invade Gul Kana, hitting Gallow’s Haven first. Shorecroft dies saving Nail and his buds.
